how to play · max

gauge

estimate real-world numbers, or put things in order of size.

overview

gauge is a mayday max daily. each mode has its own daily puzzle; playing either one counts the day. unlimited play is also part of max. being close counts; the point is a calibrated guess, not a calculator.

proximity

guess a real-world number. after each try you are told whether you are hot or cold, and whether to go higher or lower. you get six tries. some categories (population, area) are judged on a log scale; others are linear. if the prompt uses a scaled unit, the unscaled number is also accepted.

rank

put items in order from largest to smallest. drag to rearrange, or use the move buttons. no numbers are shown. items with the same value both count as correctly ordered.

bonus

if at least three rank items are in the right spot, you get an extra question: how many times bigger one item is than its neighbor. the bonus does not change whether the round counts as a win, and it uses the same closeness tolerance as proximity.

difficulty

sets how close a proximity guess must land, and how many items to rank. the daily is pinned to medium. unlimited easy is a 25% band and 4 rank items; medium is 15% and 5 items; hard is 8% and 6 items.
